Our retro cushion covers are handmade in our Arncliffe studio from original vintage linen teatowels. We love the mad designs, the riot of colour and the rich history of this wonderful domestic fabric art. The industry was huge and in my long years of collecting hundreds of linens, I've rarely seen the same design twice.
These beautiful antique linens were usually bought from a souvenir store then lovingly folded and put away in the linen cupboard. Most have never been subjected to the drudgery of drying dishes. They're pristine, crisp linens, with beautifully rendered illustrations and stories.
Most teatowels lend themselves to a 50x50cm cushion insert, with a pillowslip or overlap closure (pop the insert inside and fold back its overlap, just like a pillowslip.) Where the design makes it a better solution, i've used an invisible zip.
Some teatowels are so large and generous, they fit a 55x55cm insert, or even a European sized pillow, at 60x60.
